Development of Smartphone-based Traffic Safety Service... Preventing Pedestrian Accidents
- Provide pedestrian and worker position to drivers in real-time... Test operation on the 27th

□ In the future, pedestrians will be able to receive information on oncoming vehicles and drivers will receive the location of roadside workers in real-time to prevent traffic accidents.

□ MOLIT (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) will test run safety services to prevent accidents for pedestrians and roadside workers, who account for 40% of deaths on roads.

ㅇ From October of last year, MOLIT collaborated with Samsung Electronics to reduce pedestrian traffic accidents using a next-generation cooperative intelligent transport system (C-ITS*) to develop a pedestrian safety service and smartphone connection terminal**.

* Cooperative Intelligent Transport System, System that helps prevent traffic accidents and supports autonomous cooperative driving, etc. by integrating two-way communication in ITS

** Added C-ITS communication functions on mobile phone cases and mounts to connect with smartphones and roadside base stations

□ Pedestrian safety services will be offered in congestion areas such as intersections and bus stops and at roadside construction areas.

ㅇ Drivers can receive information on pedestrians in blind spots or who are jaywalking through the communication or receive information of roadside workers working on expressways or roads, and pedestrians can also receive information of oncoming vehicles.

ㅇ The service developed using the opened test center (Hannuri-daero and 3 other sectors, 16.6km) established in Sejong will be test operated and advanced*, and after reviewing implementation plans in the future, application will be expanded to local government C-ITS test projects**, etc.

* Improve consumer acceptability such as improving UI/UX and develop new services, etc.

** Testing C-ITS service and developing regional specialization service in Seoul, Jeju, Gwangju and Busan (’18∼’21)

□ MOLIT Advanced Motor Vehicles Division Secretary Lee Chang-gi said, “It is anticipated that the scope of C-ITS service, which was the mainly on safety services between vehicles and other vehicles with infrastructure, to spread widely to people holding smartphones.”

ㅇ “According to the features of C-ITS, where service effects enhance when there are more users, linking with smartphones with a usage rate of 94% will act as the basis to expand services to not only pedestrians but also drivers with smartphones.”
