This Year’s Automobile Policy Direction is Safety, Growth and Consumer Protection
- Urged assertive participation in the automobile exchange and refund system at the industry meeting on the 25th

□ MOLIT (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) held an automobile manufacturer meeting on the 25th to share new policy directions and communicate with the industry.

□ MOLIT stated that the major items for the new year’s policy pursuance direction as ‘safety, growth and consumer protection’ and explained the major agendas as ①commercialization of advanced automobiles, ②new industry regulation easing and investment support, ③strengthening of automobile manufacturing and operation safety, and ④expanding consumer right protection and social safety networks.

ㅇ In particular, with the growing national demand on automobile safety due to issues such as fires of BMW last year, emphasis was placed on manufacturing safe vehicles and prompt correction of defects.

ㅇ In addition, it urged manufacturers to actively participate in the automobile exchange/refund system (Korean lemon law) that was enacted from this year to protect consumer rights so that the program can settle down as soon as possible.

ㅇ Also, it announced plans to significantly ease relevant regulations so that companies can actively invest in future growth engines such as commercialization of autonomous cars and to activate the hydrogen economy.

□ MOLIT Transport and Logistics Office Chief Sohn Myung-soo said in the briefing, “I hope that this will be a year where the private sector and the government work together to realistically improve automobile safety that can be felt by domestic consumers through the newly implemented exchange and refund systems, as well as recall system innovation that is currently being discussed at the National Assembly.”

ㅇ He added, “We will provide full support so that the end-car industry can gain high competitiveness in the global market by innovating regulations such as enacting the special act on autonomous cars.”
