□ MOLIT (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) announced that it would select 147 people among seniors from 12 construction specialized high schools and that it would begin specialized technological education per school from August.

□ This education is part of the ‘apprenticeship support project’.

ㅇ The ‘apprenticeship support project’ aims at a professional technician providing customized training at the school, and once the student completes the education, they are hired as a full-time employee at construction companies to receive additional practical education.

ㅇ Specialized high school and professional construction companies participate under the support of the Korea Specialty Contract Financial Cooperative in order to improve practicality of specialized high school construction curriculum and to help young technicians stably enter the construction business.

□ Construction companies were recruited from member companies of the Korea Specialty Contractors Association and the Korea Specialty Contract Financial Cooperative looking to hire new employees since January of this year, and 40 companies confirmed to participate.

□ The education course is comprised of 3 months of in-school training and 3 months of on-site training.

ㅇ In-school technical training will be held from August to November and the instructor such as the master technician will provide 360 hours of specialized training at a school site similar to that of actual construction sites.

ㅇ Students who complete the training will join companies as full-time employees from December and receive on—job-training (OJT) for 100 hours or more under a construction technician.

ㅇ Employment agreements on employment period and compensation will be made among three parties such as the company, school and student during in-school training, and once in-school training ends, the students will be employed.

□ In order to achieve practical training achievements, funding will be provided for training and practical training equipment costs, while companies will be supported with employment subsidies if they hire students.

□ MOLIT is planning to continuously monitor the program through satisfaction surveys and meetings by visiting the schools and construction sites during training.

□ MOLIT Construction Industry Division Manager Park Jung-soo said, “We will do our best in operation and management so that the apprenticeship support project can simultaneously resolve the issues of lack of skilled technicians at construction sites and the lack of jobs for youths.”
