The KNCAP’s 20th Anniversary Ceremony Held

- Future vision for the safety assessment of autonomous vehicles was suggested at international conference

□ The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) announced that a ceremony to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the KNCAP would be held under the theme “Safer and Happier” at the InterContinental Seoul COEX on November 14 (Thu) and November 15 (Fri) 2019.

ㅇThe Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has implemented the Korean New Car Assessment Program (KNCAP*) since 1999 with the aim of providing consumers with automobile safety information through various testing and assessments including vehicle crash tests.

* KNCAP: Korean New Car Assessment Program

ㅇWhen the program was first implemented in Korea, no vehicles received the top grade in crash safety, but now all vehicle models subjected to the assessment receive grade 1. Likewise, the KNCAP has encouraged manufacturers to develop safer vehicles and has contributed to automobile safety in Korea by preventing accidents and mitigating related damages.

ㅇIn commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the program, events will be held to celebrate the program’s major achievements and to suggest new visions for safety assessments, which will actively respond to rapid changes in the automobile environment of the future with self-driving technologies.

□ The events will be held for two days: The KNCAP 20th anniversary ceremony and an international conference will be held on November 14, 2019; and a technical tour will take place the following day.

ㅇThe 20th anniversary ceremony will look back on the course that the KNCAP has followed for the past 20 years and will look ahead 20 years (vision proclamation*). An awards ceremony will also be held whereby the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will award commendations to manufacturers and men of merit who have significantly contributed to enhancing automobile safety in Korea.

* Vision Proclamation : The Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and manufacturer representatives will share the direction for the KNCAP policies and will announce a vision for the KNCAP.
- (Participants) Representatives of eight automobile companies (Hyundai, Kia, SsangYong Motor, GM Korea, Volkswagen Group, BMW, Volvo, and Renault Samsung)
- (Description) Installing Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as basic equipment on newly released vehicles in Korea starting in 2020.

ㅇThe international conference will be held under the theme “Innovation of Automobile Safety Technologies and the Future of the KNCAP.” The conference aims to suggest future visions for countries implementing a vehicle safety assessment program and to share the latest technology overview of major automakers in and outside of Korea.

ㅇThe technical tour, which will be held on the second day, consists of a tour of K-City* and testing facility tours led by the Korea Automobile Testing and Research Institute (vehicle safety assessment organization under the Korea Transportation Safety Authority).

□ “During the event period, we will sign an MOU with an overseas automobile safety assessment organizations, to actively conduct joint research on safety assessment technologies for autonomous vehicles. This is part of the efforts to prepare for the future when autonomous vehicles will be commercialized,” said the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
