Airport safety experts in the Asia-Pacific gather to share outstanding cases on airport safety

□ The MOLIT (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) will hold the ‘2019 ICAO Asia-Pacific Aerodrome SMS Seminar’ together with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Incheon International Airport Corporation (President Koo Bon-hwan) for two days on May 27 (Mon) and May 28 (Tue) at the Incheon Grand Hyatt Hotel.

* ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization): UN organizations specializing on overseeing policies and orders of the global airport industry (192 member countries / 35 in Asia-Pacific)

** SMS (Safety Management System): Safety management activity system including organization, responsibility, procedures, processes, regulations, etc. based on safety management

□ This event is the first international seminar for airport safety held in Asia-Pacific region with Korea serving as the first host country.

ㅇ About 150 persons from government institutes, airport SMS personnel and academic circles of countries that are parts of ICAO Asia-Pacific will attend the seminar and make presentations on 14 topics including outstanding airport operation cases, advanced safety management techniques.

ㅇ In particular, the Asia-Pacific headquarters will make a presentation on international aviation safety evaluations that will be implemented from 2021 as well as on the latest trends of safety management systems and international standards for airport runway surface management.

ㅇ Korea is also planning to introduce its airport operation systems as well as actual cases of operating the safety management system both in Incheon and Jeju International Airport.

□ Meanwhile, both concerns and interest in aviation safety have been growing recently due to the passenger aircraft accident at the Moscow International Airport and the B737 Max accident.

ㅇ This seminar held at Incheon International Airport which is the gateway to Korea, is expected to serve as a platform to promote the excellence of our airport operations, while elevating interest in airport safety.

* (Airport Tour, day 2) Incheon Airport’s visiting facilities including safety management office → control tower → fire department, etc.

□ Director General for Airport and ANF Policy of MOLIT, Kim Yong-seok said, “We expect this airport SMS seminar will take Korea’s aviation industry transporting over 110 million passengers annually to the next level to be the leading country in aviation."

ㅇ “We also hope to raise awareness on ‘safety’, which is a core value for the development of aviation industry, and share excellent safety management systems and operation cases that will contribute to significant development of Korea’s airport safety management system.”
