Organized Alliance to Establish Smart City Project City Led by the Private Sector
- ‘Smart City Convergence Alliance’ corporate seminar held on the 9th and participating companies to be recruited until the 25th

□ The first step has been taken to establish and operate the smart city national pilot city (Sejong 5-1 neighborhood, Busan Eco Delta City) being led by the private sector.

ㅇ MOLIT (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) held the ‘Smart City Convergence Alliance’ corporate seminar at the Gwanghwamun KT Building from 10:30 a.m. on January 9 (Wed) and announced that it would be recruiting participating companies after announcing the alliance composition plan to create a smart city private-government collaboration communication channel for companies.

□ The government designated Sejong 5-1 neighborhood and Busan Eco Delta City as the smart city national pilot city and is pursuing preemptive public investments and bold regulation reforms.

ㅇ However, due to the character of the smart city that combines and operates various sectors including mobility, safety, environment, energy, health care, education, culture and shopping, administration, etc., cooperation from companies in different sectors and active participation by the private sector are essential.

ㅇ Accordingly, the ‘Smart City Convergence Alliance’ that will be organized is receiving attention for providing an opportunity for cooperation among companies and as a private sector-government communication channels that share government policies and government project directions.

□ The Smart City Alliance will be the core group and government communication window that will lead the establishment and spread of sustainable smart cities where the private sector including not only small, medium, large and start-up companies, but also universities, research institutes, associations, etc.

ㅇ It is expected to be divided into subcommittees to fulfill roles in different sectors such as technological cooperation between different companies, development of business models, legal, system and regulation reforms, and domestic/foreign distribution and expansion.

ㅇ In addition, plans are to organize an operating committee joined by representative companies, experts, research agencies, associations, etc. as the final decision-making organization related to the joining and operation of the alliance, and it will also be equipped with an expert consulting group and secretariat* to procure effectiveness.

ㅇ In particular, plans are to first launch the ‘national pilot city subcommittee’ to procure visible results, and it will engage in technological cooperative and convergence so that IoT, big data and AI technologies, etc. can be integrated into the national pilot city infrastructure, while also serving to find business and service models, and to find areas to reform regulations and systems.

□ The Alliance Corporate Conference will be held at the Job Committee briefing room on the 12th floor of the Gwanghwamun KT Building (West) from 10:30 a.m. on January 9 (Wed), and it will be held in the order of sharing the Alliance pursuance plans, national pilot city (Sejong, Busan) corporate participation plans and future plans, Q&A, and corporate suggestions, etc.

ㅇ Applications from companies wishing to participate will be received from the 11th to the 25th for a total of 15 days, and starting with the initiator conference at the end of January, plans are to hold the founding general assembly and launching event in mid-February.

□ MOLIT Urban Economy Division Manager Lee Jung-hee said, “The Smart City Alliance will play a pivotal role to establish a sustainable innovative smart city led by the private sector for the fourth industrial revolution through the participation of various companies.“

ㅇ She added, “As a subcommittee related to the national pilot city will be launched first, we are hoping that it will receive a lot of interest among companies that wish to contribute to the establishment of a world-leading smart city.”
