‘Free Wi-Fi’ at All Rest Stops in National Expressways from the 25th
- 100Mbps offered regardless of carrier at all 248 service areas including rest stops and parking lot rest areas

□ All expressway rest areas managed by the Korea Expressway Corporation will provide free Wi-Fi services from the 25th. Anybody can use high speed 100Mbps wireless internet services regardless of the carrier.

□ MOLIT entered an agreement* with the Korea Expressway Corporation and three mobile communication carriers (KT, SKT, LGU+) to install public Wi-Fi equipment at the 248 rest stops and the parking lot rest areas on expressways, as they did not offer Wi-Fi services before. Services will begin on January 25, one day before the Lunar New Year holidays.

ㅇ The public Wi-Fi at rest stops and parking lot rest areas project was joined by three wireless communication carriers to install public Wi-Fi so that users can enjoy high-speed 100Mbps free Wi-Fi service regardless of the communication company.

□ Until now, free Wi-Fi services were offered only at the 224 rest areas such as service areas, bus stops in the greater Seoul region, transit parking lot (EX-hub), etc., but services were not available at some rest stops and parking lot rest areas*

ㅇ From now on, free Wi-Fi will be offered at all rest areas (rest stop, service area, parking lot rest area, bus stops in the greater Seoul area, transit stops) at all expressways managed by the Korea Expressway Corporation.

□ Meanwhile, it was found that the national communication cost reduction value by using Wi-Fi at expressway rest areas was 14.6 billion KRW* in 2018, and by expanding Wi-Fi services to all expressway rest areas this year, it is expected that national communication cost savings and social value creation effects will grow even further.

* Converted data usage of areas where Wi-Fi was installed in 2018

□ MOLIT Road Bureau Director Baek Seung-geun said, “MOLIT and the Korea Expressway Corporation will continuously expand public Wi-Fi in new service areas and rest stops to improve convenience of expressway users.”

ㅇ He also added, “We will continue to develop various services that can enhance user convenience by collaborating with relevant agencies.”
