Test Drive Track Speeds Up Autonomous Driving Technology Development Support including Data Analysis
- Exclusive autonomous driving test track, ‘K-City’ opened to universities and small and medium businesses for free for three months

□ MOLIT (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) is planning to open the autonomous driving test track ‘K-City’ to small and medium businesses and universities for free from March 4 for three months.

<Case in which technological development was difficult due to not having an exclusive testing track>

* (Case 1) The autonomous driving vehicle of the research lab at University A received approval to test drive on a real road, but it took too much time and cost too much for turning in order to verify the expressway tollgate passing technologies that it was developing

* (Case 2) Startup B that was recently established developed an autonomous driving system, but there are concerns on performance and safety to test drive on actual roads, so it had no other option but to test a little at a time at vacant lots and parking lots near the company, and thus, development was sluggish

ㅇ Up until last year, 60 autonomous driving vehicles received temporary operation approval to test drive for more than a combined 710,000km, and test driving is increased rapidly on real roads*. However, an exclusive test track that allows repeated and recreation tests is essential for faster technological development.

ㅇ Therefore, MOLIT completed the construction of the 360,000㎡ autonomous driving vehicle test track ‘K-City’ that recreated actual road environments in December of 2018 and opened it up for use at any time.

ㅇ It was opened up for free with the goal of accelerating technological development of autonomous driving vehicles, and it is planning to not only offer test drive roads of ‘K-City’, but also equipment and space for vehicle maintenance and driving data analysis as well.

□ Details on procedures to use ‘K-City’ are available at the Korea Transportation Safety Authority’s homepage.

ㅇ When intending to use WAVE (exclusive communication network), 5G, and other communication environments constructed in ‘K-City’, you must make arrangements with the officer listed in the homepage for free rental of the vehicle communication terminal.

□ MOLIT automobile management officer Kim Su-sang said, “’K-City’ will become the center of autonomous driving vehicle technology development in Korea, and we will listen to the opinions on site to provide the necessary support.”
