Recalls for Automobiles and Construction Equipment such as Toyota, Benz, Honda and Man Truck

-[49,360 cars from 23 models, 694 construction equipment from 8 models]-

□ The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) announced that it would conduct voluntary corrective actions (recalls) on 49,360 vehicles from a total of 23 models sold by seven automobile makers such as Toyota, Benz, Honda, Subaru, Man Truck, and Suzuki Ssangyong Motors, and 694 construction equipment for eight models from Man Truck construction equipment (dump trucks) after finding manufacturing defects.

□ First, for 37,262 cars from nine models such as the Lexus ES300h imported and sold by Korea Toyota Motors, vehicle self-certification investigation results showed that the light intensity of the reflector did not meet the standards as prescribed in Article 49 of the Rules on Automobile (Parts) Performance and Standards’.

ㅇ This defect is a violation of the automobile safety standards and thus, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will first order recalls, and then levy fines considering the correction rate, etc.

ㅇ These vehicles can receive free replacements with improved parts at Lexus service centers from June 27.

□ Second, in the case of 3,715 for two models such as the Tivoli manufactured and sold by Ssangyong Motors, it was found that the fuel pipe connection status was incomplete and so when starting the vehicle, there is the possibility of the engine turning off and fires due to fuel leaks. Thus recalls have been put in place since May 27 after receiving free inspection and reconnection at Ssangyong Motors customer centers nationwide.

□ Third, for 3,204 cars from four models such as the C 200 KOMPRESSOR imported and sold by Mercedes-Benz Korea and 1,677 cars from three models such as the Forester imported and sold by Subaru Korea,

ㅇ it was found that there was excessive explosion pressure of the inflater when deploying air bags due to defective air bag modules in the driver’s seats supplied by Takata, thus having the possibility to injure the driver, etc. due to metal parts.

ㅇ MOLIT announced that in the case of Benz Korea, it held interviews with personnel from Benz on May 24 as the Takata air bag recall performance displayed the lowest correction rate among 19 companies, urging prompt corrective actions, thus leading to this recall.
ㅇ In the case of Subaru Korea, the Subaru headquarters announced to begin recalls in November 2018, but reported the corrective actions to MOLIT on May 31, and it is planning to take actions after reviewing the delayed recall.
ㅇ In the case of these vehicles, recalls to replace the parts free-of-charge will start on June 12 for Benz at official Benz service centers, and from June 17 for Subaru.

□ Fourth, in the case of 1,880 ODYSSEY vehicles imported and sold by Honda Korea, it was found that due to TCU (transmission control unit) defects, there could be cases in which the vehicle’s battery connection cable could loosen or battery performance dropping, which could lead to the TCU not being able to detect driving conditions because of dropped voltage, and could shift to P (mode) causing noise in the vehicle transmission or causing the vehicle to stop.

ㅇ These vehicles can receive free services such as replacing the transmission or updating the TCU from June 5.

□ Fifth, in the case of 1,502 TGS Cargo Truck and TGX tractors and 694 dump trucks (construction equipment) from eight models imported and sold by Man Truck Bus Korea, it was found that there was software defects in automatic transmission (TraXon), in which when the driver manually changes the gear shift lever during the course of activating the efficient Roll function, the transmission signal cannot be processed and the transmission stays in neutral, thus being unable to send power even when pressing on the gas, thus having the possibility to interfere with safe driving.

ㅇ Recalls have been in progress since May 30 for these vehicles to replace the parts with improved parts free-of-charge at Man Truck Bus Korea service centers nationwide.

□ Also, for 120 BURGMAN 200 ABS, which is a motorcycle imported and sold by Suzuki MC, it was found that because of a design error in the rivet coupling hole for fastening the driven pace, which is the power train device, there are gaps between the rivet and hole, and when driven continuously, there could be damages to the driven pace, thus being unable to deliver power and not being able to reaccelerate, which could thus interfere with safe driving.

ㅇ For these vehicles, recalls will be provided from June 14 at Suzuki stores and branches nationwide to replace the part with improved parts.

☐ The makers will notify the vehicle owners via mail or mobile phone text message on recall instructions and in the event that the vehicle owners repaired the respective defects at their own expense prior to the recall, the owners can request compensation to the maker for the repair costs.

□ MOLIT operates an automobile and construction machine recall center (www.car.go.kr, 080-357-2500).

ㅇ It announced its plans to perform objective and fair manufacturing defect investigations for reported matters and in the event that manufacturing flaws are found, it will take prompt corrective action to do its best to protect the life and property of citizens from safety accidents resulting from manufacturing defects of automobiles and construction machines.
