The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT, Minister NOH Hyeong-ouk) announced that it will hold a briefing session on March 8 (Tue) for all local governments to provide information on this year’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS)* Project Contest – including selection procedure and criteria, eligible applicants, and benefits for the winners – and also to gather opinions from the local authorities.

* ITS (Intelligent Transport System) improves traffic efficiency and safety through efficient management of traffic information and scientificㆍautomated operation of transport systems, powered by advanced transport technologies.

The briefing session will be held online following the COVID-19 guidelines, with around 100 participants from metropolitan cities and local governments across the country.

MOLIT has been supporting local government projects on ITS establishment since 2009, in order to enhance local governments’ traffic management and communications capabilities and to boost nation-wide distribution of advanced transport technologies.

This year, MOLIT will provide a total of KRW 133 billion for various ITS projects of 56 local authorities, which include establishment of traffic incident management systems using traffic information collection and provision technologies and CCTVs, smart intersections and crosswalks, and priority signal systems for emergency vehicles.

Currently, a total of 54 local governments are running traffic information centers to provide advanced services such as information on real-time traffic condition and traffic incidents to the local residents. Such ITS services are on their way to be expanded to small and medium-sized regional cities going forward.

* ITS traffic information center establishment rate: 100% in special·metropolitan cities, 75% in Gyeonggi-do, 16% in regional areas

“There is a growing interest towards the field of ITS from local authorities, along with Gangneung‘s efforts to become the host of the 2026 ITS World Congress,” said Director Jong-oh Kim of MOLIT Smart Road Team. “This year, we revised the ITS project contest program to factor into account the different environments and characteristics of local communities and regions. I ask for more active participation from local governments in this year‘s ITS project contest, so that we can identify ITS services that meet the needs felt by the public in each region.“

Director Kim added, “MOLIT will continue to ramp up its efforts to achieve nationwide deployment of ITS, so that everyone can have access to safe and convenient ITS services in all corners of the country.”
