new post
The National Geographic Information Institute (NGII, Director General CHO Woo-seok) under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT, Minister KIM Yoon-duk) announced that it has decided to defer its decision on Google's request to take the high-precision national base map as the digital topographic map on scale of 1:5,000 abroad, while having further extended reviewing period by an additional 60 days (excluding holidays) once more, with a final decision scheduled by 11 November. The latest additional extension, decided on 8 August 2025, was agreed in response to Google’s request for additional time to review measures addressing security concerns associated with exporting the high-precision national base maps, after the previous relevant committee meeting on 14 May, which was concluded that further discussions were needed on potential national security implications before a decision could be made extending 60 days initially.MOLIT will be thoroughly reviewing Google’s forthcoming feedback in close consultation with relevant ministries before making a final decision on whether to transfer them.
