Drones to Become Common Items in Everyday Life... Drone Air City Plans Announced
- Drone Regulation Sandbox Expo from the 7th... 7.5 Billion KRW in Funding for 10 Fields

□ MOLIT (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) will hold the ‘Drone Regulation Sandbox Expo for Expanding Public Demand’ comprised of the ‘19 drone regulation deferment regulation (hereinafter called regulatory sandbox) project seminar such as announcing plans for the Drone Air City for using drones in the city, and announcements of the 2018 project performance.

ㅇ The regulatory sandbox project aims at promoting outstanding technologies possessed by private drone companies to commercialize them early on through eased regulations, funding support, and connecting supply and demand, while also expanding the extension of domestic industrial-use drone markets.

- In 2018, 4 billion KRW was injected to nine companies in five fields* and the free-contest sectors to support substantiation of business models using drones.

- In 2019, the budget was increased to 7.5 billion KRW to expand the substantiation support sectors to about 10 fields, and opportunities to substantiate drone technologies in cities will be offered through local government contests.

<Main events at the expo>

□ In addition to announcement of project performance and the year’s business plans, the drone regulation sandbox for expanding public demand will also host various auxiliary events over two days.

① Announcement of 2018 Regulatory Sandbox Performance

- On the 7th, five public institutes (Army, Meteorological Administration, Busan Customs, Coast Guard, LH) announced plans to use drones that completed substantiation through the drone regulatory sandbox project to perform missions of various agencies this year.
- On the 8th, 24 flight regulations, project regulations and reform methods that are obstacles to commercialize the technologies through the drone regulatory sandbox project will be announced, and the substantiated contents of the nine manufacturers that participated in the drone regulatory sandbox project will be announced.

② 2019 Regulatory Sandbox Project Plans

- Seminars on business invitations and free sector contest projects including the Drone Air City invitation for the commercialization of drones in urban areas this year will be held on the 7th and 8th and company invitations for this will also be held on March 15.

- (Substantiation City Invitation) Detailed test and substantiation items will be provided from bottom-up by local governments according to their characteristics to promote utilization of drones in urban areas, and it will pursue substantiation and utilization (select about 2 local governments) for the selected local governments.

- (Company invitation) After selecting around 10 project fields, it will select corresponding companies (complete instruments, software, service, etc.) and provide substantiation support (select about 10 consortiums).

- (Free-sector contest) Select startups aiming at challenging technological development to provide support (select about 3 companies).

③ Auxiliary events such as flight demonstration, exhibits and seminars

- During the event period, visitors can see drones that were substantiated through the drone regulatory sandbox such as item delivery, coastal monitoring, topographic information collection, etc. demonstrate flights to complete their mission, as well as a group flight of 100 drones flying together.

- In addition to the nine companies participating in the drone regulatory sandbox, exhibits on drones from about 50 drone companies such as companies in the Pangyo Corporate Support Hub, Drone Business Association, and Cheongna Robot Land will be held.

- Also, drone utilization consulting between manufacturers and the public sector, as well as seminars on core technologies of participating companies will also be held.
