Recalls for Imports such as BMW, Volkswagen, Honda and Volvo Truck[11,513 vehicles from 58 models]
□ MOLIT (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) announced that it would conduct voluntary corrective actions (recalls) on 11,513 vehicles from a total of 58 models sold by six importers such as BMW, Volkswagen and Honda from which manufacturing defects were found.
□ First, BMW Korea is currently in recall after finding defects last year, but it will conduct additional recalls after finding more applicable vehicles.
ㅇ 2,461 cars including the 116i was found to have defects of power distribution of vehicles not being smooth due to wear and tear of tin plating of terminals due to B+ (battery poles) cable corrosion since December of last year, and recalls have been conducted. The same defect was found for 5,428 vehicles from nine diesel models such as the 120d, and so additional recalls will be held.
ㅇ In addition, recalls have been in place for 25,732 cars from 21 models such as 128i from the same importer after finding potential for overheating of the blow by heater due to increased resistance caused by moisture in the joining part of the PTC heater and copper tube since March of last year. A total of 2,045 cars from 22 models such as the 523i were additionally found to have the same heater, and thus additional recalls will be conducted.
ㅇ In addition, possibility for restricting engine output due to crank shaft position sensor manufacturing defects was found in July of last year for 934 cars such as the 118d, but the same defect was found in 18 cars from two models such as the 520i, and so additional recalls will be conducted.
ㅇ Recalls on these vehicles are being carried out to change the parts to normally manufactured parts free-of-charge at official BMW service centers nationwide since April 25 (B+ cable, April 29 for blow by heater).
□ Second, in the case of 1,972 cars from seven models including the Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI imported and sold by Audi-Volkswagen Korea, the possibility of the transmission not operating properly during continued drive due to defective parts in the transmission (accumulator: oil pressure generator) was discovered.
ㅇ For these vehicles, free inspections will be offered by official Volkswagen service centers to replace with improved parts from May 10.
ㅇ For 326 cars from fours models such as the Audi TT Coupe 45TFSI qu. imported and sold by the same importer, it was found that there was excessive explosion pressure of the inflater when deploying air bags due to defective air bag modules in the driver’s seats supplied by Takata, thus having the possibility to injure the driver, etc. due to metal parts.
ㅇ For these vehicles, the parts will be replaced with improved driver’s seat air bag modules for free at official Audi service centers from May 10.
ㅇ In the case of 153 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI Allspace cars, early rupture defect was found due to use of wrong raw materials when manufacturing the rear coil spring. Also, in the case of 35 cars from two models such as the Lamborghini Gallardo Coupe, possibility for errors in the malfunction information save function was found due to program input errors when first entering the engine control unit (ECU) software.
ㅇ These vehicles can receive free replacements with improved parts or ECU updates from official Volkswagen and Lamborghini service centers from May 10 (May 17 for Gallardo Coupe).
□ Third, in the case of 1,306 cars from two models such as the ACCORD imported and sold by Honda Korea, recalls were conducted from July 2015 for defects in the driver’s seat air bag inflater. However, it was found that dry materials with high amounts of humidity were used during the manufacturing process of the replacement part (Takata PSDI-5D inflater), which could lower performance of the propellant and have excessive pressure when air bags are deployed and will thus be recalled again.
ㅇ These vehicles can receive free replacement with improved driver’s seat air bag (TRW and Autoliv) inflaters free-of-charge at official Honda Korea service centers from May 1.
ㅇ Regarding the recalls of Takata air bags, MOLIT judged that as air bags are directly connected to the lives of people and that the manufacturer was passive in the recall process, and therefore, instructed the Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute (KATRI) to regularly inspect the recall progress of the 19 manufacturers, and MOLIT also directly and strongly urged manufacturers to carry out recalls.
□ Fourth, 182 cars of five models such as the FH Cargo imported and sold by Volvo Truck Korea was found to have possibility of damages in the automatic control gear of the brake caliper (housing on the outer part of the brake pad) due to manufacturing process error of the parts manufacturer, and because of this, there is the possibility that automatic slack adjustment may not occur depending on the wear of the brake pad, thus resulting in brakes not working or the braking distance to become longer.
ㅇ These vehicles can receive servicing by replacing with new parts if necessary after inspections free-of-charge at maintenance plans such as the Volvo Truck Korea truck center from May 10.
□ Also, in the case of 37 vehicles from three models of SCOUT from Indian Motorcycle imported and sold by Hwachang, the possibility for decreased braking performance due to internal pollution of the brake system (brake hose and master cylinder) was found, and so free air-removal and brake fluid replacement services are being offered from May 3.
ㅇ In addition, it was found that bent front brake hose could cause hose cracking in 11 Metropolis 400 of the Peugeot Motorcycle Company of France of KR Motors, and there is also the possibility for cracks to occur in the steering lever (front wheel connection device). Thus, free exchange services to improved front brake hoses and steering levers will be available at Peugeot dealers nationwide from May 15.
☐ The makers will notify the vehicle owners via mail or mobile phone text message on recall instructions and in the event that the vehicle owners repaired the respective defects at their own expense prior to the recall, the owners can request compensation to the maker for the repair costs.
□ MOLIT operates an automobile recall center (www.car.go.kr, 080-357-2500) for the purpose of collecting and analyzing manufacturing defect information of vehicles to ensure safety of citizens from automobile defects.
