Re-recalls for Jaguar Land Rover Diesel Engines, and Recalls for Makers and Importers such as Man, Daimler, Hyundai and Kia (40,338 cars from 43 models)

□ MOLIT (Minister Kim Hyun-mee) announced that it would conduct voluntary corrective actions (recalls) on 40,338 vehicles from a total of 43 models sold by 10 automakers and importers such as Man Truck, Daimler Truck, Hyundai, Kia, etc. as well as re-recalls for the Jaguar Land Rover diesel engine.
□ First, for 19,561 cars from seven models such as the Discovery 4 imported and sold by Jaguar Land Rover Korea, upon conducting appropriateness reviews of diesel engine recalls since October 2018, it was found that the corrective action methods and number of subject vehicles by the car manufacturers were inappropriate.

ㅇ Accordingly Jaguar Land Rover Korea changed its past corrective action method and added 3,539 to the original 16,022 cars for a total of 19,561 cars in seven models and submitted this corrective action plan to MOLIT and began recalls again.

- These vehicles can go to official Jaguar Land Rover service centers from July 15 for inspections, and if engine problems are found, they will be changed to new engine assemblies. However, in the case of the 3,231 cars manufactured in 2017 and newly added in this re-recall, time will be needed to develop a diagnostic equipment program, and therefore, recalls will begin after giving individual notice to the car owners once development is completed around October of 2019.

ㅇ In addition, for 122 Jaguar I-PACE, the electric regenerative braking device was found to be nonconforming* to the standards prescribed in Article 15 Paragraph 11 of the Safety Standards, and therefore, recalls will be conducted and fines will be levied for not conforming to safety standards.

- These vehicles can receive free brake control module software updates at official Jaguar Land Rover Korea service centers from June 19.
□ Second, in the case of 118 vehicles from three models such as the TGM Cargo imported and sold by Man Truck Bus Korea, it was found that the spring U bolt connection nut was manufactured with insufficient rigidity due to the manufacturing process, giving it the possibility for the bolt to be damaged, which would displace the axis making it impossible to drive normally, and thus interfere with safe driving.

ㅇ These vehicles can receive improved parts and be exchanged at Man Truck Bus Korea service centers nationwide from May 30.
□ Third, 1,280 vehicles from four models such as the Actros imported and sold by Daimler Truck Korea will begin five different recalls.

ㅇ For 254 Sprinter vehicles, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority’s Korea Automobile Testing and Research Institute performed automobile self certification suitability reviews according to the Automobile Management Act, and found that the it violated tolerance standards of specifications, and so in addition to recalls, fines are expected to be levied.

ㅇ For 24 Unimog, it was found that the tail lights did not operate normally due to defects in the manufacturing process of the tail light electric wiring, thus having the possibility to lead to accidents when driving at night. This is a nonconformity to Article 42 of Safety Standards, and therefore, fines and recalls are expected according to the Automobile Management Act.

ㅇ For four Sprinters, it was found that due to errors in the high beam (head light) control program, the high beam may not automatically turn off despite there being light from oncoming vehicles or vehicles in front, which could interfere with night time driving of other drivers, thus interfering with safe driving. This is a nonconformity to Article 38 of Safety Standards, and therefore, fines and recalls are expected according to the Automobile Management Act.

ㅇ For 561 Actros trucks, it was found that there was excessive explosion pressure of the inflater when deploying air bags due to defective air bag modules in the driver’s seats supplied by Takata, thus having the possibility to injure the driver, etc. due to metal parts.

ㅇ For 437 vehicles in three models such as the Arocs, it was found that there was a design flaw in the internal air-tightening parts of the retarder, which is an auxiliary braking device, thus giving it the possibility for internal coolants to leak, reducing the operational performance of retarders, which could cause the braking distance to become longer thus interfering with safe driving.

ㅇ These vehicles are being recalled for exchange to improved parts free-of-charge at Daimler Truck Korea service centers nationwide from June 17.
□ Fourth, for 1,752 Muranos imported and sold by Korea Nissan, it was found that corrosion occurs in some parts in the ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) control device (actuator), thus having the possibility that even when brakes are stepped on normally, braking can be delayed or braking distance made longer, which could interfere with safe operation.

ㅇ The vehicles can be taken to official Korea Nissan service centers from July 8 to receive inspections and to exchange the ABS actuator, etc.
□ Fifth, for 11,317 cars from three models such as the Genesis G90 manufactured and sold by Hyundai Motor Company and 2,529 vehicles from two models such as the Niro (DE PE) manufactured and sold by Kia Motors will be recalled.

ㅇ For 11,225 vehicles from two models such as the Genesis G90 of Hyundai and 2,398 vehicles of the Kia Niro (DE PE), smart cruise control software errors were found that results in the smart cruise speed up/down control and car distance maintaining function to not operate, which could speed up or down the car regardless of the intent of the driver, thus having the risk of accidents.

- Recalls to update the software for these vehicles free-of-charge are being conducted at the corresponding car service centers since June 14.

ㅇ For 92 Hyundai Tucson (TL) and 31 Kia Sportage (QL), parts defects were found in the tie rod end, which is a device that controls the direction of tires, thus having the possibility for the tire connecting part of the tie rod end to be detached, making it impossible to steer normally, thus interfering with safe operation.

- These vehicles are being recalled to receive inspection and then to exchange with improved parts or to adjust the wheel alignment at the respective service centers since June 10.
□ For 3,659 vehicles from 19 models of 4 manufacturers, recalls have begun or will begin for the following defects.

☐ The makers will notify the vehicle owners via mail or mobile phone text message on recall instructions and in the event that the vehicle owners repaired the respective defects at their own expense prior to the recall, the owners can request compensation to the maker for the repair costs.

□ MOLIT operates an automobile recall center (www.car.go.kr, 080-357-2500) for the purpose of collecting and analyzing manufacturing defect information of vehicles to ensure safety of citizens from automobile defects. Enter your vehicle number in the homepage to check whether your vehicle is subject to recall and the detailed manufacturing defects and flaws at any time.
