2nd Metropolitan Transport Policy International Seminar held
in celebration of 3rd Anniversary of Establishment of Metropolitan Transport Commission


The Metropolitan Transport Commission (Chairman Baek Seung-geun) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the opening of the 「Metropolitan Transport Policy International Seminar」 via online‧offline on February 22.

Over 20 overseas and domestic traffic experts plan to attend this international seminar to celebrate the third anniversary of the establishment of the Metropolitan Transport Commission and discuss in depth the vision and paradigm shift on future metropolitan transport.

Since its establishment on 19 March 2019), the Metropolitan Transport Commission has been continuously expanding the transportation infrastructure such as metropolitan railways and roads with the aim to implement “30-minute commute between cities” within metropolitan areas.

Furthermore, the commission strives to strengthen the public nature of public transportation and improve user convenience by expanding the semi-public bus system and Alddeul Transportation Cards and building transit centers as well as implementing various policies including the introduction of new transportation methods such as hydrogen‧electric metropolitan buses, trams, etc.

The main agenda of the seminar is 「Metropolitan Transportation Policy Changes facing Digital Transformation and Pandemic」

The purpose of the seminar is to provide a space for the metropolitan transport administrative bodies*, academia and research centers from 5 different countries, including Korea, France, the United States and the United Kingdom, to share each country’s current state of public transportation, policy trends and precedents for innovative measures and discuss the future development direction of metropolitan transportation.

The main presentation and discussion topics per session are as follows:

Session #1. With Hongik University Professor Hwang Kee-yeon charing the session, three traffic experts* from three countries, including Île-de-France Mobilités, will introduce and discuss successful metropolitan transportation policies and other related items in their respective countries under the topic “Policy Changes in Global Metropolitan Transport”.

● Presenters: Île-de-France Mobilités CoS Olivier Francois, NYMTC Assistant Director Gerry Bogacz, Director of the Metropolitan Transport Policy Division Son Deok-hwan

Director of the Metropolitan Transport Policy Division Son Deok-hwan, the keynote speaker for Korea, plans to present the vision for Korean metropolitan policies while introducing the 「Basic Plan for Metropolitan Transport(’21~’40)」 instituted in October 2020.

(Session #2) With Ajou University President Choi Kee-choo serving as the session chair, 4 traffic experts from 3 countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, will present and discuss innovation methods for public transportation in midst of the Covid-19 pandemic under the topic 「Future Planning and Innovation in Relation to Changes and the Pandemic」.

MTC Chairman Baek Seung-geun said, “I expect this international seminar to provide a meaningful opportunity to hear about each country’s metropolitan transportation policies, discuss the development direction and lay the foundation for international cooperation in metropolitan transportation.”

He added, “We will continue to apply expert opinions and success stories discussed during today’s seminar to form a better metropolitan transport committee which will then institute global metropolitan transportation policies through continuous cooperation with international metropolitan transport organizations, the local government, etc.”
