Contributing Satellite Data for Relief and Recovery from the Devastating Earthquake in Turkiye

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT, Minister WON Hee-ryong) announced that it has decided to provide satellite data to support relief and recovery in Turkey, where a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred on 6 February (local time).

As the images taken by the Land Satellite is considered as the best high-resolution satellite data in Rep. of Korea (black and white 0.5m, color 2m), it is expected to be used for effective disaster countermeasures and recovery, such as remotely checking sites in difficulty to reach due to roads destructions, etc. caused by earthquakes, with scientifically estimating the scale of damages and simulating the spread of them.

Since 2020, MOLIT has provided images taken with the Land Satellites on a trial basis to local governments where large-scale domestic disasters have occurred, and has received positive responses by the local governments for their high usability in disaster countermeasures and recovery.

Director OH Seong-ik, Spatial Information Promotion Division of MOLIT, expressed, “We hope that the great losses and destructions caused by the devastating earthquake in Turkiye could be restored as soon as possible, and will help the National Land Satellite play a part of the roles in promptly carrying out relief and restoration activities.”
