The National Geographic Information Institute (NGII, Director General CHO Woo-seok) under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and
Transport (MOLIT, Minister PARK Sang-woo) announced that it has decided to defer its decision on Google's request to take the high
definition national base map as the digital topographic map on scale of 1:5,000 abroad, while getting extended reviewing period by an
additional 60 days (excluding holidays), with a final decision scheduled by 11 August.
Earlier in 2016, a similar extension was made to allow for sufficient reviews, ultimately resulting in the rejection of the taking request through consensus by the inter-agency consultative body on 18 November 2016.
This time, MOLIT determined that further in-depth discussions with relevant agencies are required, particularly regarding national security
and implications on domestic industry, and so forth.
The government plans to collect additional input from the geospatial information industry and other stakeholders before making a final
decision by 11 August.
