The National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT, Minister KIM Yun-duk) has announced awardees for the Antarctica Place Naming Contest (20~31 October 2025), which invited the public to propose Korean names
for geographical features in Antarctica.
Following a comprehensive review, ‘Cheonghae Peak’ was selected as the Grand Prize winner at the award ceremony held on 5 January
2026, to be along with a total of 16 newly proposed names adopted through the National Committee on Geographical Names hoping to be
presented on the Antarctica map, including the 4 awardees from this contest and the others suggested through academic and geographical
researches.
MOLIT plans to submit the list of 16 proposed names to the Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica (CGA) of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) during the first half of 2026 expecting to be registered as the official names and to serve as safeguards for providing clear
location information to expedition members working in the extreme environment.
