Pursuant to National Agenda No. 31: To Realize Future Mobility and the K-AI City, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT, Minister KIM Yun-duk) announced a Testbed City Initiative for Autonomous Driving to utilize the entire Gwangju Metropolitan City as the first fully citywide integrated demonstration ground for self-driving to advance both AI development and service commercialization.
This large-scale practical road testing aims to significantly enhance the international competitiveness of Korea’s autonomous driving AI
technologies and services, while Korea has been a global forerunner in institutional frameworks, having established the world’s first Level 3
automated driving safety standards and introduced a Level 4 performance certification system.
To address rapid technological shifts toward AI-driven autonomous driving, that AI systems independently make driving decisions based on
large-scale data learning, where Korea seeks to close the gap with the U.S. and China, the government has decided to pursue this type of city-scale demonstration initiative.
