The Republic of Korea has been elected to a three-year term on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) at its 42nd Assembly currently being held in Montreal, Canada. Since its first election to the Council in 2001 under Part III, Korea has now secured re-election for the ninth consecutive term, further solidifying its position on the international aviation stage.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations for civil aviation, comprising 193 member states, to promote the development of air navigation, aircraft technology, safety, and security.
The ICAO Council is the highest decision-making body of ICAO, encompassing legislative, administrative, and judicial functions such as setting international aviation policy directions, determining international standards, and mediating aviation disputes. Its 36 State Representatives are elected every three years through a vote by member states.
